ANDREW NEWELL: BIOGRAPHY

Andrew Newell is currently the top ranked skier in the US. Born 11.30.1983 in Bennington, VT, he has lived in close by Shaftsbury, VT ever since.

As a kid Andrew participated in swimming, soccer, lacrosse and skiing. At age 15 he decided skiing was the way for him and further dedicated himself to the sport. He enrolled in Stratton Mountain School in 1998 for 8th grade. He spent the next 5 years attending classes and being coached by Sverre Caldwell and Amy Caldwell.

In 2001 Andrew qualified for his first international competition, World Junior Championships, in Szklarska-Poreba, Poland. He placed 6th place. The following year he was named to the US Development Ski Team.

After graduating from Stratton Mountain School, Andrew decided against college in favor of moving to Park City, Utah to train full time with, then Development Coach Chris Grover, and the rest of the US Ski Team crew.

For the next three seasons Newell remained in Park City and the Development team. During that time he attended several World Junior Championships and his first World Championships event in Val Di Fiemme, Italy. In 2004 he skied his first World Cup in Stockholm, Sweden and also broke the top 15 in Pragelato, Italy.

In 2005 Andrew was named to the US Ski Team. Spliting time between Southern Vermont and Park City, his training has led him to numerous top 5 finishes including a podium in Changchun, China in March of 2006. Newell also attended the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy where he competed in both the Sprint and Sprint Relay.

Outside of skiing Andrew produces ski films (see xskifilms.com), chases waves in the spring time- always looking for surf, skateboards and hangs out with his boys in the VTM.
